Dear Students:

Attached please find 7 critical essays, two on Yeats' "Sailing to Byzantium" and one on James Joyce's Ulysses, T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dallaway, Salman Rushdie, and V. S. Naipaul each.

Choose two from the following topics and write for each a short essay at least 3 pages long (that is, your whole paper should be at least 6 pages long). Your essays should be unified, coherent, well-organized, well-developed, and grammatically consistent. Be sure to copy the topic you choose at the head of each essay you will write.

1) Read the two critical essays on W. B. Yeats' "Sailing to Byzantium". Summarize the differences between modernism and postmodernism and then give your own interpretation of Yeats' poem.

2) Read the two critical essays respectively on James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Summarize them and then write your responses based on your understanding of Joyce's and Woolf's works after reading the essays.

3) Read the critical essay on T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Summarize it and then write your response based on your understanding of the poem after reading the essay.

4) Read the two critical essays respectively on V. S. Naipaul and Salman Rushdie. Summarize them and write about your understanding of the so-called
"mongrel literature" exemplified by Naipaul's and Rushdie's stories on our reading list.
